The Misconception of “The Secret”
Updated: Jul 15
I’m pretty sure all of you have heard of “The Secret”. And most of you have probably read it too. If you haven’t, then have a look at it here.
I started reading it at the beginning of the year and I just loved it. I don’t believe in religion or anything, but I truly believe things happen for a reason and the universe has got a great impact on our lives. I.e, when stars are aligning good things happens to you, in the same way that bad stuff all happen at once.
So reading the book was fascinating to me and after I read it, I decided to apply it to my life and practice it every day. I started writing a gratitude journal in September last year, so that actually helped me focus so it felt right. And I can actually tell you, two of the things I wanted have already manifested, and another thing I wanted that involved someone else has manifested itself as well! So for me, it definitely works!
What’s “The Secret” all about?
For those of you who haven’t read it, the book focuses on the Law of Attraction and how you can use to get what you want. It basically works by focusing on what you want and send positive thoughts about what you want, take actions towards what you want and whatever you wish will be manifested and come to you. Easy.
I follow two entrepreneurs very closely, that you probably have heard of too. Gary Vaynerchuk (Gary Vee) and Steven Bartlett (who I hope I get the chance to meet someday). They’ve both made themselves of nothing and Steve actually quit uni to start his own business.
I follow them on social media and often listen to their podcasts. Not because I want to be an entrepreneur, but mostly because they inspire me and give some really good motivational tips. Both of them have mentioned “The Secret” on a few occasions, saying they don’t believe in it at all, but given what they have achieved and how they go about, they actually practice it.
And this is how I’ve then realised that actually, they have got a misconception about the book. And that’s mainly because they never read it and all they know about it is from what other people have told them, or maybe it was me that understood it differently to them and everyone else.
What’s the misconception?
I say its a misconception because when I read the book I understood that you have to keep positive thoughts whilst you take actions towards that goal of yours. That’s the Law of Attraction. If you keep thinking that what you want is already yours, the universe will align and create the perfect opportunity for you to get what you want, whilst you do your best to get it.
Both Gary and Steve say that “The Secret” doesn’t work, because you can’t just think about what you want and that will come to you. Without effort.
Now, of course, nothing is gonna happen if you just think about what you want and wait for it to just show up with no effort! I mean, If I want a house I’m not just gonna sit and think I’ve got that house and it will come to me. I mean how would that even work?! I’d always have to search for a house, find out prices and then get it. I’m not gonna wait around and then one day the keys are just there. Unless I married a millionaire and he got it as a present, obviously.
However, I do understand their point of view, when they say things like this makes us lazy and less productive. Working for a goal is one of the most amazing things ever. Especially when it’s completed. That feeling of success and achievement is just great.
So moral of the story is: if we want something we have to take actions to get it. Have a goal and focus on it. If you listen to Gary and Steve’s Podcasts you’ll learn just that. All they have now they dreamt about it. They focused on achieving their goals and they did. And either they believe it or not, they have used “The Secret”.
Read “The Secret”, and try some of the things they say. Trust me, it makes you look at life differently and if you’re patient and persistent, you’ll see results!
